Assessments

Moodle tools are all about engaged learning and they help professors monitor student learning and motivate for self learning and self-evaluation.

Visit the following site to learn more about Authentic Assessment techniques and methods.

Throughout the years of my teaching face-2-face and online/blended courses I designed different types of assessment that help students learn and inform my teaching:

Diagnostic methods:

1. Learning Contract Based on Syllabus. Students are asked to read the syllabus and create a learning contract based on the course learning outcomes. The exercise requires that students read the course requirements and grading closely. Developing the contract of understanding provides the opportunity for students to formulate personal goals for the semester. I ask them to reflect in the middle of the semester in their journals or blogs on their achievements with regard to the learning contract.

2. My student/teacher Profile” Questionnaire allows assessing the initial level of students’ knowledge of the course concepts and initial teaching skills and ability to use of technology.

3. Technology Skills Inventory” allows assessing the computer skills students have and their need improvement and professional development.

4. INTASC Competences Survey” exposes students to the 10 standards of the beginning teacher. Students complete a chart giving evidences of their competences. Deficiencies are then the subject of a plan for future development during the course and in the program.

5. " Study Skills Survey" helps students to see what heir strengths and weaknesses are in learning and studying; based on the results of the survey they make plans for improvement.

Formative methods:

I designed different types of ongoing assessment tools to have feedback on students’ everyday learning and achievements:

· I use a lot of assignments that require students to create concept maps, graphic organizers, posters based on the assigned reading materials. These function as an assessment tool for me to see how well students understand the assigned material.

· Some course content concepts require tests. I designed Self-tests, self-tutorials, screen casts, peer evaluation reviews, rubrics, checklists, etc.

· In the middle of the semester I ask student to conduct a “Course and Self-evaluation Midterm Feedback” in the form of 3 to 4 PPT slides. It allows students to get a sense of their progress and for me to gain some feedback on the course flow and points for improvement.

· A formative assessment tool, the Moodle Forum, has proven to be very effective in assessing student preparation for the class.

Summative methods

· I successfully use program rubrics in all my courses. As summative tools of assessment in Teaching with technology/Literacy and Technology course I use rubrics for the final Web site, blog (see attached) , wiki, Internet project and for an electronic portfolio, an authentic tool that reflects students learning accomplishments throughout the semester and their reflective analysis of their professional growth in the course and in the program.
