The best way to start designing the course on Moodle - is to think of the format.

I prefer the option "course modules."

I like this option not only because of the reasons explained in the Moodle options (easy to fit changing times and re-design options, etc.) but also because it helps to create a pattern that fits into the notion of brain research -- "human brain searches for patterns."

Here is what I usually include in my Moodle course sites. I came up with the pattern that repeats from module to module.

I have a couple of general blocks/sections before the weekly modules start.

Block 1: Instructor and Course information (use Edit)

From "Add resources" create files:

Syllabus, Course/Moodle Online Learning Etiquette, Course Requirements, Course Map, etc. You can use ""

Block 2: Moodle and Course Tutorials

What is Moodle, How to create a profile, How to be successful in Moodle course? How to submit assignments, How to create PDF files, etc.

Block 3: Course Rubrics and Guidelines

Block 4: Setting up the stage.

Discussion Forum. DF: Introduce yourself!

I create a Flickr badge with the students’ individual pictures and groups.

Weekly Modules:

Depending on the course, the module usually includes but not limited to:

Module Overview

(Introductory statement) (From “Add Resources”)

  • Learning Outcomes/objectives

Readings

  • PPT Lecture to view + Podcast to listen to
  • Websites to explore/review
  • Videos to ponder

Practice Makes Perfect

  • Develop MasteryActivities (from Add Activities)
  • Group/Class activities/projects
  • Chat/wiki Group assignments
  • Express your Choice
  • Reflect and Share
  • Blog's Focus of the week (reflective Learning Logs)

If it is an online class, or a blended course:

  • Virtual Meeting link (Elluminate Live* or WiZiQ) (From “Add Activities” Tools)

Submissions (for grading): (From “Add Activities”)

  • DF reflection on the Topic of the week can be graded/rated
  • Assignment based on the week's content + Self-rubric
  • Group Work Weekly Summary & Collaboration Review (DF)
  • Individual Feedback Form on Group CL work

Here is a slideshow of the snapshots of my course modules created with Web 2.0 tool - Picassion
